Parashat VaYakhel ("And he assembled") Shemot (Exodus) 35:1–38:20

Theme: Building Together in Unity and Purpose
Opening Scripture:
"And Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel and said to them, ‘These are the things which the Lord has commanded you to do…” (Exodus 35:1)
Reflection for Couples:
In Parashat VaYakhel, we see the power of unity as the people of Israel come together to build the Tabernacle (Mishkan). Each person contributed willingly with their skills, resources, and time. This act of communal devotion reflects a deeper truth: when we work together in harmony, guided by G-d’s commands, we create something sacred.
Marriage is much like the building of the Mishkan; it requires unity, shared purpose, and the willingness to bring our unique gifts to the relationship. Just as the Israelites had different skills, some were artisans, some brought materials, and some offered service, each spouse has strengths and contributions that enrich the marriage.
When couples focus on building their marriage with intentionality, love, and devotion to G-d, their relationship becomes a holy dwelling place where His presence can reside.
Discussion Questions:
- In what ways do we each contribute to the “building” of our marriage?
- How can we ensure that we are working in unity rather than separately?
- Are there any areas where we have been holding back from giving our best to our marriage, much like those who gave freely to the Mishkan?
Practical Application:
- Build Together: Just as the Israelites followed G-d’s instructions in constructing the Mishkan, establish shared goals and a vision for your marriage. Pray together about your spiritual, emotional, and practical aspirations.
- Offer Willingly: In the same way, the people brought offerings from their hearts (Exodus 35:29), consider what you can freely offer to bless your spouse—whether it’s patience, encouragement, or acts of service.
- Honor Rest: Before discussing the Mishkan, Moses reminds the people of Shabbat (Exodus 35:2-3). Prioritize rest and time together, ensuring that busyness does not overshadow the sanctity of your relationship.
Closing Prayer:
"Abba, thank You for the gift of marriage and for calling us to build our relationship as a sacred dwelling place for Your presence. Please help us to work together in unity, offering our strengths with willing hearts. May our home be filled with Your peace and love. B’shem Yeshua, Amen."
Action Step for the Week:
Choose one practical way to “build” your marriage this week, whether it’s praying together, setting aside time for rest and connection, or offering something selflessly to bless your spouse.
Shabbat Shalom!
