Parashat Bereshit (Genesis 1:1–6:8)

Theme: “In the Beginning of Covenant Love”

Scripture Focus:

“So G-d created humankind in His image; in the image of G-d He created him; male and female He created them.” Bereshit / Genesis 1:27

Devotional Reflection:

In the opening words of Torah, “Bereshit bara Elohim”. “In the beginning, G-d created”,  we witness not only the creation of the universe but also the foundation of relationship. Before there was a covenant with Abraham or Israel, there was the first covenantal union, ish and ishah, man and woman created in the divine image. Marriage, in the Messianic understanding, mirrors the covenant between Yeshua the Bridegroom and His Kehillah (Bride). When couples walk together in unity, they reflect the tzelem Elohim, the divine image, bringing light into a world still touched by chaos. Yet the same Bereshit story also reminds us of how easily intimacy is broken. When Adam and Chavah (Eve) hid from G-d, they also began hiding from each other, covering their vulnerability with shame. True covenantal love calls us to return to transparency and grace, to walk “naked and unashamed” again before one another and before G-d.

Messianic Jewish Counseling Insight:

In every couple, there is a “creation” story and a “fall” story. Healing begins when both partners invite Ruach HaKodesh to recreate what has been distorted, turning blame into blessing, hiding into honesty, and distance into divine intimacy.

For Reflection Together:

  1. In what ways can we better reflect G-d’s image in how we speak and listen to each other?
  2. Where might we still be “hiding” emotionally or spiritually in our marriage?
  3. How can we invite Yeshua to be central in our relationship’s daily creation and renewal?                                             Closing Prayer:

Abba, in Your love, You created us for covenant and connection. Breathe new life into our marriage, Ruach Elohim (Holy Spirit), just as You hovered over the waters in the beginning. Help us walk together in the light of Your image, in truth and tenderness, through Yeshua our Messiah. In Messiah Yeshua, Amen.
